New Facebook News Feed Makes Video a Priority

Visual content in the form of photos and videos has emerged as the most valuable content on social media, and now it's even more important in the latest Facebook News Feed update. Facebook announced last week that they are releasing a completely new News Feed. Though Facebook has gone through many changes over the years, but the News Feed has stayed pretty much the same. In fact, this will be the first major update to the News Feed since 2006.

Facebook has made the purpose of this update very clear: to develop a visual ‘newspaper’ of the stories that are most important to you. In the new update, information will be organized into sections, and visual content such as photos and videos will be better featured and receive optimal screen time.

So what does this change mean for your business Facebook page? Here are 2 things you can do to take advantage of these new changes before your competition does:

Invest in Your Facebook Cover Photo

One of the changes in the new Facebook News Feed update is that when someone likes your page, your cover photo shows up in their friends News Feed. This gives you a massive amount of screen real estate for free, but if you don’t have a well done cover photo, you’ll miss out on this opportunity. Make sure your cover photo is a high resolution, professional image: either a photograph that demands attention or a branded graphic that has been professionally designed.

Your cover photo must pique the attention of the viewer will giving them a basic understanding of what you’re about. Think of the cover photo as being as important as a sign you would hang on your building - this is the online sign people will see that identifies you and draws passersby inside for a better look.

Invest in a Video Strategy

With the new Facebook News Feed update, video becomes just as important as images. If you aren’t currently using video on your Facebook page you need to start - NOW! Whether it is how-to videos, client testimonials, or your business’s version of the Harlem Shake (just kidding on that last one), videos are the key to getting more value out of your Facebook page.

A focus on visual content is where social media is headed, which makes sense because the brain translates images 60,000 times faster than text. Focus on these two areas in your Facebook strategy, and you will be well prepared to succeed as these new Facebook changes roll out over the next few weeks.
